At least 3 soldiers of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) were killed in an ambush by unidentified rebels in the heart of Virunga National Park, near Kibumba in the territory of Nyiragongo on Monday, November 23, 2020 .
The information was confirmed by Major Guillaume Ndjike Kaïko, spokesperson for the Sokola 2 North Kivu operational sector.
“It was a patrol of our elements. Attackers from Rugari looted 12 cows from the population. So our elements tried to pursue these rebels who fled into the Virunga Park and that is where they were ambushed. We lost 3 items, and still got a cow. As I speak to you, we are continuing the search to recover all the other cows, ”he said.
Local civil society is outraged by the persistence of rebel groups in this region despite ongoing military operations. She suspects the Hutu Rwandan rebels of the FDLR as perpetrators of this attack
