4 Dead and 14 Wounded in Exchanges of Fire Between 2 Armed Groups; FARDC Restores Order

The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) announced that they had restored order on Sunday, November 23, 2025, in the city of Uvira (South Kivu), following clashes between two factions claiming to be "fake Wazalendo." The clashes severely disrupted the city, the provisional seat of provincial institutions.

According to information provided by the spokesperson for Operation Sukola 2 South Kivu, Second Lieutenant Mbuyi Kalonji Reagan, sporadic gunfire reported in several neighborhoods resulted in a provisional death toll of four: one FARDC soldier, two members of the Wazalendo groups involved, and a civilian motorcyclist. Fourteen people were also wounded, including nine civilians, two loyalist soldiers, and three Wazalendo fighters. The wounded were transferred to the Uvira Military Referral Hospital and the Uvira General Hospital. The FARDC (Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo) reported recovering three AK-47 rifles during the operation.

Military authorities denounced a "destabilization plan" attributed to enemies of the country, who are allegedly using groups falsely claiming to be part of the Wazalendo movement to sow confusion and undermine stabilization efforts in the east of the country. The army stated that these elements were "neutralized and rendered harmless" thanks to the joint intervention of the Panther units and the Rapid Intervention Battalion.

The commander of the 33rd Military Region and head of the South Kivu and Maniema Task Force, Brigadier General Ilunga Kabamba Jean-Jacques, called on the population "not to succumb to disinformation" and to cooperate with the security services. He also urged residents to report any troublemakers in a security context marked by the activities of armed groups, notably the M23-AFC coalition, which the FARDC accuses of being supported by the RDF.

In the aftermath of the incidents, a lull was reported in the city. The army asserted that the situation was now under control, pending the conclusions of investigations launched to identify those responsible for the disturbances.

UPDF intensifies operations against ADF in Mambasa

Two loud explosions were heard early Saturday morning around 5:54 a.m. in the Mambasa territory, plunging the population into shock.

According to information obtained from the Ugandan army hierarchy based in DRC, UPDF drones had flown over Mambasa airspace the previous day, targeting several ADF positions along the Epulu River, in the Walese Karo chiefdom. This Saturday morning, two bombs were dropped by Ugandan army on a key stronghold where the ADF leader, Musa Baluku, is reportedly located.

Is Burundian intelligence recruiting banyamulenge into a new armed outfit?

According to several in our HUMINT and OSINT collection centres and information sources, General Emmanuel Ndayiziga, presented as head of the documentation or military intelligence service (G2) in Burundi, is allegedly involved in operations related to the abduction of Banyamulenge refugee children living in camps in Burundi.

It is reported that General Ndayiziga is working in collaboration with Sébataware Willy Munigantama, Minister Gisaro, and Kongolo Jacques in these alleged actions aimed at transferring children to South Kivu province, where an armed group attributed to Minister Gisaro and one of President Tshisekedi's advisors, Kongolo Jacques, is reportedly being formed under the command of Sébataware Willy, alias Munigantama.

According to these military and civilian based Intelligence sources, eight (8) children have already been abducted, four (4) of whom are said to be under 18 years old. The abductions reportedly took place in the Inyenkanda camp on November 4 and 5, 2025. It is also alleged that an agent of the Burundian documentation service, Ndayirukiye Diomode, was involved in these suspected operations.

These allegations underscore growing concerns about the safety of Banyamulenge refugee children in camps in Burundi and call for an independent investigation to establish the facts and ensure the protection of vulnerable populations.

The Arrest of General Masunzu!Is FARDC SAFE?

Lieutenant General Pacifique Masunzu, commander of the 3rd Defense Zone of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), was reportedly arrested this Sunday, according to several military sources.

Witnesses claim that the arrest took place in Kisangani, the capital of Tshopo province, shortly after the visit of the FARDC Chief of Staff, who was returning from an official mission to Bujumbura, the economic capital of Burundi.

According to intelligence sources inside the army,"TheChief of Staff arrived in Kisangani from Bujumbura. He went to General Masunzu's residence, where his phones were confiscated before he was taken to Kinshasa, the Congolese capital," .

The reasons for the arrest remain unclear.

No official statement from the Congolese army has yet confirmed or commented on the arrest of General Masunzu.

However, several theories are circulating within security circles in Kinshasa. Some suggest alleged links with former President Joseph Kabila, who recently launched a coalition hostile to the Congolese government. Others accuse him of ineffectiveness in the face of the M23 advance in the east of the country.

Other sources claim that the high-ranking officer interfered in operations against General Olivier Gasita. Gasita was forced to leave the city of Uvira, which became the capital of South Kivu province, after the fall of Bukavu, its former capital, to the M23 rebels earlier this year.

General Gasita was suspected by some members of civil society and the Wazalendo militias, supported by Kinshasa, of being a Rwandan spy and of tolerating the advances of the M23. Demonstrations against his installation resulted in deaths and paralyzed the city of Uvira before the army decided to evacuate him, assisted in particular by the Burundi National Defense Force (FDNB).

Yet, both generals are members of the Banyamulenge community, a Tutsi minority that has been persecuted for many years. However, they have always regarded each other with suspicion.

A high-ranking commander with a strategic background

Lieutenant General Pacifique Masunzu, from South Kivu, commanded the 3rd Defense Zone, which covers five provinces: Tshopo, Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, and Maniema. Before this appointment, he had commanded the 2nd Defense Zone based in Lubumbashi, Haut-Katanga.

A series of arrests in the Congolese army

His alleged arrest adds to a long list of arrests within the FARDC (Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo).

According to several observers, more than 28 generals have been arrested in recent months, accused of collusion with the enemy or desertion in the face of the front lines.

The M23, a former Tutsi rebellion, took up arms again at the end of 2021, accusing the Congolese authorities of failing to honor their commitments to reintegration. Since the beginning of the year, its fighters affiliated with the Congo River Alliance (AFC) have controlled several strategic, mineral-rich areas in the provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu, as well as their capitals: Goma and Bukavu.

Congolese authorities accuse Rwanda of supporting the rebels, which Kigali firmly denies. Burundi, for its part, has deployed approximately 10,000 soldiers to eastern Congo to fight alongside the FARDC and their allied militias against the M23.

Pending an official statement from the Ministry of Defense or the General Staff, the fate of Lieutenant General Pacifique Masunzu remains uncertain.

UPDF sergeant opens fire on his superior

A Ugandan army (UPDF) sergeant, drunk, opened fire on his superior, Major Ukoya Gabriel, and three other people on the evening of Saturday, November 1, 2025, in Zale, about 4 kilometers east of the town of Mahagi.

Twirwaneho and wazalendo clash in mikenge
