A man alleged to be FDLR rebel has been caught in Goma

 A man armed with an AK 47 weapon was arrested by the security forces of the Mobile Intervention Group (GMI) on Tuesday, September 08, 2020, in the Mugunga district, Karisimbi commune, in the town of Goma, capital of North Kivu.

This man in his late thirties is identified as a suspected rebel of the Hutu Rwandan armed group of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), according to the mayor of the city, relayed by Brigitte Semivumbi, bourgmestre of the commune of Karisimbi.

According to our source, this man was apprehended in the morning by the GMI thanks to the alerts of the population. This “bandit” was then questioned by elements of the Congolese National Police.

“We believe he is an alleged FDLR rebel, but we cannot say for sure given that the investigations are ongoing. The GMI arrested him, the police officers questioned him and now he is being held in the jail of the investigative police, ”reports the burgomaster Brigitte Semivumbi Mbayiki.

When questioned by the press, the accused denied his involvement with rebel groups and claimed that he is a coal miner in the Virunga National Park.

As a reminder, in the space of a week 7 people were killed by firearms in the city of Goma. The last attack on the evening of Monday, September 07 in the Ndosho district left 4 dead including 2 FARDC soldiers and 1 police officer.
