He who betrays once will betray FOREVER...

Here is the story of former renegades who, once again, are said to have attempted to overthrow Sultani Makenga:

Imagine the hills of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where a silent storm threatens to destroy one of the region's most notorious armed rebellions: the M23. Today, the movement is said to be deeply fractured by a true war of chiefs, a crisis that is violently shaking its political and military leadership.

At the center of this intrigue is the powerful military leader Sultani Makenga, whose power has just escaped a vast internal destabilization plot. To understand the roots of this betrayal, we must jump back to the past, to 2013. At that time, a violent split had already divided the movement. Makenga had opposed the followers of the infamous rebel leader Bosco Ntaganda, against a backdrop of deep disagreements over the political strategy pursued by the leader of the time, the pastor Jean-Marie Runiga.

Nearly fifteen years later, history seems to be repeating itself. The name of that same strategist, Jean-Marie Runiga, has mysteriously resurfaced in confiscated phones and the confessions of the current plotters. In the greatest secrecy, these seditionists had drawn up an entirely new organizational chart to overthrow the system in place: Runiga was slated to take the post of governor of South Kivu. For his part, Théo Binamungu was to seize the province of North Kivu. His goal was to oust the current governor, Joseph Musanga Bahati, whose very difficult relations with the military close to Makenga had already lit the fuse of a leadership war.

But how was this internal coup thwarted? It all came down to a mole and a brilliant counter-espionage operation. The officer François Kazarama, who has been imprisoned since 2025 by the movement's leadership, orbited around this plot before delivering its precious details and documents. In the shadows, the fearsome M23 master-spy, John Imani Nzenze, pulled the strings. Using Kazarama as an infiltrated agent, Nzenze succeeded in unmasking the plotters and is now personally leading the interrogations. The revelations have splashed several high-ranking officers, including Lieutenant-Colonel Séraphin Mirindi and Colonel Josué Biyoyo Karhanga, the latter suspected of having secretly rallied troops for the mutiny.

Today, the atmosphere within the rebellion is electric. Managing this crisis with extreme caution, Sultani Makenga and his master-spy are walking on eggshells. They are carrying out targeted arrests on a drip-feed basis, preferring to keep the suspect officers under tight surveillance. They avoid mass imprisonments, terrified at the idea of provoking a general uprising in their own ranks.

However, the wound is open and the fracture is real.

The lines are shifting, circumstantial alliances are forming between civilians and military, and the tension is reaching a historic level.

While the M23 tears itself apart from the inside, an ultimate fear haunts its general staff: seeing the Kinshasa government exploit these cracks and instrumentalize this internal war to destroy them once and for all.
