Frontline situation as of October 4,2026.
Following intense clashes that began at 3:00 a.m. this Sunday, the Wazalendo took control of the village of Mushongi—located less than 7 km from the center of katoyi in Masisi territory—by 6:00 a.m. The mitimingi position—which, according to several sources, the Wazalendo are struggling to capture—remains the key to seizing control of the Katoyi sector. Since September, and continuing through the morning of Sunday, October 4, the Wazalendo have repeatedly requested air support from the DRC armed forces to advance, but without success. In Kalehe territory, South Kivu province, M23 rebels (allied with Rwanda) and the Wazalendo have been clashing since this morning in Kafufula, Chambombo, and Kashovu. Our intelligence on the ground is working to provide a timely update on the progress of these battles.
Yes,it is true that Military positions are changing rapidly in several sectors. But "retaken" locality does not necessarily mean that one side has secured lasting control over the entire surrounding area. I note instances where sources do not allow for confirmation of a change in control. Masisi has become far more than just a military front: it is a battle for roads, farmland, minerals, and access routes to Rubaya, Ngungu, Walikale, and South Kivu. Fighting has also involved the use of drones and heavy artillery. Civil society groups in Masisi reported civilian casualties during clashes in late September, particularly around Kaleta, Bitoyi, Nyabiondo, and Burungu. However, these figures should be treated with caution unless independently confirmed but retains significant territorial depth. No decisive strategic victory.
Why is Remeka so important to all warring sides?-WHY IS CONTROLLING REMEKA CRUCIAL TO THE CONFLICT IN MASISI? Controlling Remeka—located in the Ufamandu I Groupement of Masisi Territory—is considered a highly significant move for the warring parties, given the area's strategic location and the routes connecting various districts. According to reports, the redeployment of government forces (FARDC and VDP) near Remeka is linked to three key strategic objectives. First is blocking the route leading to Walikale and South Kivu. This move aims to prevent AFC-M23 forces from advancing into Walikale Territory and to cut off the connection between this area and Kalehe. Second is controlling access routes. Controlling Remeka helps seal off minor paths used for transporting supplies and for flanking maneuvers, particularly across the rugged, hard-to-reach terrain of the "Petit Nord" region. Third is undermining the combatants' economic base. Controlling this area can help disrupt illicit taxation networks linked to mining, agriculture, and livestock activities. In this conflict, characterized by shifting positions and the use of terrain, the author of this message identifies Ufamandu as a key area in the security strategy for North Kivu province. However, this analysis reflects the my own assessment; the details regarding the strategic importance of Remeka and the military tactics of the opposing sides though not having pointed out the importance of remeka, everyone can see and weight it importance to both M23 and FARDC.
