Bangoka International Airport, located in Kisangani, was attacked on Saturday, January 31, 2026, by “several kamikaze drones” allegedly belonging to the AFC/M23 rebels.
According to information from ACAJ (Congolese Association for Access to Justice), these drones were intercepted and destroyed by the FARDC (Armed Forces of the DRC) air defense system. However, one enemy drone crashed a few meters from the runway.
Congolese authorities condemned this “new attempt by the rebels to destabilize the country” and assured that the FARDC would redouble their vigilance to protect strategic infrastructure and the civilian population.
This incident comes amid ongoing tensions between the Congolese government and the AFC/M23 rebels, who are supported by neighboring Rwanda. Peace talks between the parties remain stalled.
