DRC: Army Calls on US and Qatari Negotiators to Address AFC/M23 Violations of Agreements
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) denounced , in a press briefing, the "continued aggression" by the AFC/M23 rebellion despite the commitments made in recent agreements, including the ceasefire.
"Every day, the M23/AFC coalition continues to attack our positions, systematically violating the ceasefire," declared the spokesperson for the armed forces, Major General Sylvain Ekenge.
He called on the American and Qatari facilitators of the negotiations to "immediately take the necessary measures" in response to these "expansionist ambitions."
While reaffirming their commitment to the peace process, the FARDC (Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo) warned that they “have taken and will continue to take all necessary measures on the ground to respond firmly to these provocations.”
This hardening of their stance comes as new fighting has been reported in the last 48 hours in Masisi and Walikale, in North Kivu, as well as in South Kivu, raising fears of a large-scale resumption of hostilities in eastern DRC.
